In the events of Mobile Suit Gundam: Char's Counterattack, fourteen years after the One Year War, Amuro Ray is a veteran pilot and the ace of the Earth Federation's Londo Bell unit. His immense experience and evolved Newtype abilities make him the only person capable of opposing the catastrophic plans of Char Aznable, who has resurfaced as the leader of Neo Zeon. Disappointed with humanity, Char seeks to force its total migration into space by causing a nuclear winter, for which he plans to drop the asteroid Axis onto Earth.
