The Gundam F90II stands as a critical technological link between the F90 experimental prototype and the later F91 Gundam within the Universal Century timeline. Its release in the Master Grade (MG) line as a Premium Bandai (P-Bandai) exclusive solidifies its status as a sought-after collector's piece. This scale model, based on a 1990s design, is brought to life with contemporary plastic modeling engineering, proving the timelessness of its original concept.

Model Kit Features

The MG Gundam F90II features a significant redesign compared to the MG Gundam F90, utilizing multiple newly molded parts. Modifications include a distinct head design, a restructured torso to house expanded generators, and completely remodeled shoulder thrusters and leg units. The kit's engineering achieves precise color separation through individual part molding, minimizing the need for paint.

The "I-Type" (Intercept Type) equipment, designed for interception missions, is the main component of this version, and its parts are newly molded:

  • Flight Shield: A Sub-Flight System that the mobile suit can dock with for atmospheric flight. Due to its size and weight, a support stand is included to ensure stability in poses.
  • Beam Lancer: A long-range beam weapon with an articulated grip that facilitates various combat poses.
  • Thrust Augmentation Units: Additional propulsion units mounted on the legs to increase thrust for high-speed maneuvers.

The F90II's system of 11 hardpoints delivers full modularity and is the core of the "F90 A to Z Project." This system ensures the I-Type equipment is compatible with the MG Gundam F90 kit (sold separately), allowing for extensive customization.

Despite its quality, the model has some weak points. The interchangeable finger hands struggle to hold weapons securely, and sections like the upper thigh and crotch armor tend to detach during posing. The weight of the I-Type equipment also compromises the figure's balance. A notable critique is the omission of an adapter compatible with standard Bandai action bases—a significant design flaw for a kit designed for aerial poses.

Mobile Suit Overview: Gundam F90II

By the end of the Universal Century U.C. 0100, the Earth Federation established the Strategic Naval Research Institute (SNRI) to develop a new generation of smaller, more efficient mobile suits, breaking their dependency on Anaheim Electronics. The result was the "Formula Project," with the Gundam F90 as its prototype.

The F90II is the result of rebuilding and upgrading the F90 Unit 2. Two F90 prototypes were manufactured: Unit 1 with the "Type A.R." combat AI (based on Amuro Ray) and Unit 2 with the "Type C.A." (based on Char Aznable). In U.C. 0120, Unit 2 was stolen by the Oldsmobile Army. After its recovery in a severely damaged state, SNRI rebuilt it as the F90II.

The upgrades included a more powerful generator, but the most significant change was replacing the "Type C.A." AI with a prototype Bio-Computer. Unlike learning AIs, the Bio-Computer was a man-machine interface derived from Psycommu technology, directly linking the unit's sensors to the pilot's brain to improve reaction time and spatial awareness. This made the F90II the testbed for the technology that would be perfected in the Gundam F91.

The manga Mobile Suit Gundam F90 chronicles the conflict against the Oldsmobile Army on Mars to recover the stolen unit. The plot reveals Federation Lieutenant Bosch Weller as an undercover agent and the main antagonist. The story culminates in Federation pilot Def Stallion's victory over Bosch.
