The live-action adaptation of Mobile Suit Gundam continues to take shape under the production of Legendary Pictures and Bandai Namco Filmworks. Recent reports from Deadline and The Hollywood Reporter indicate that actor Noah Centineo (To All the Boys I've Loved Before, Black Adam) is in advanced negotiations to join the main cast. If the deal is finalized, Centineo would share the screen with actress Sydney Sweeney (Euphoria, Immaculate), who was reported to be in final talks for the project last March.

Production Details

This casting would mark the second consecutive collaboration between Centineo and Legendary Pictures, as the actor is already attached to the studio to play Ken in the new Street Fighter movie scheduled for October 2026. According to sources close to the production, the plot of Gundam revolves around a dynamic similar to "Romeo and Juliet," where Sweeney's character and the male protagonist (potentially Centineo) find themselves on opposing sides of an interplanetary conflict, thus maintaining the war-torn and emotional essence of the original franchise.

Direction and screenplay are helmed by Jim Mickle, known for his work as showrunner on the series Sweet Tooth. Mickle took over creative leadership following the departure of director Jordan Vogt-Roberts and Netflix from the project. Production is scheduled to begin filming in early 2026 under the supervision of the new subsidiary Bandai Namco Filmworks America, established to manage the global expansion of the brand.

Franchise Context

Mobile Suit Gundam, created by Yoshiyuki Tomino in 1979, pioneered the Real Robot genre and is set in the Universal Century, an era where humanity has colonized space. The central narrative typically explores political and military conflicts between Earth and its space colonies, fought using Mobile Suits. This project represents the first attempt to bring this universe to the big screen in a Western live-action format.

With production ramping up for a 2026 shoot, the Live-Action Gundam movie is closer than ever. What are your thoughts on Noah Centineo joining the cast? Let us know in the comments below!
