The long-awaited return of Mobile Suit Gundam Thunderbolt to the animated world might be closer than we think—but it won't happen unless the conditions are perfect. During a celebratory fan meeting in Shibuya for the conclusion of Yasuo Ohtagaki's manga, key figures from the anime production shared their thoughts on a potential Season 3. With the final 27th volume of the manga released this week, the conversation around completing the animated journey has reached a fever pitch.
"I want to do it properly"
Director Kou Matsuo, who helmed the first two seasons, addressed the fans' desires with cautious optimism. He emphasized that the original anime was a "miracle" made possible by a specific team at a specific time. "If we are going to do a sequel, I don't want there to be a gap in quality," Matsuo stated. "Personally, if we do it, I want to do it properly. It's difficult unless the timing is just right—not a compromise, but the perfect moment".

The Producer's Mission
Producer Naohiro Ogata (from Bandai Namco Filmworks) expressed his deep desire to see Matsuo return to the director's chair. He mentioned his intent to persuade Matsuo to make the sequel a reality.

Manga creator Yasuo Ohtagaki compared the situation to Hathaway's Flash, which took decades to be animated. While it might take 5 or 10 years, he encouraged fans to keep their passion alive: "As long as you keep loving it, there might be a chance. Please keep saying you want it!".
